Dr. Avi Weisfogel has always had a passion for helping others, which led him to become a dentist, obtaining his Doctor of Dental Surgery from New York University College of Dentistry. He sees his profession as an opportunity to help and educate individuals in need of dental care. Recently, this passion has led him to support the international medical charity Operation Smile.
Operation Smile is a non-profit organization that provides corrective surgery and care for those born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. Cleft lip and cleft palate is a birth defect that affects billions of children worldwide. According to the organization’s website, about one child in every 500-750 is born with this medical issue. It is possible that, without correction, a cleft can cause dental problems, ear infections possibly resulting in hearing loss, and malnutrition possibly leading to starvation. Many of those affected by a cleft lip or cleft palate are poor and do not have access to adequate surgical care. Operation Smile uses medical staff volunteers and charitable donations to provide care to patients across the globe. By supporting this organization, Dr. Weisfogel is working to give these patients a chance at a better life.
