Why You Should Stop Douching

Women around the globe have been douching since at least the mid-19th century. Initially, some used it to try to prevent pregnancy. It’s now known that douching will not prevent pregnancy as Fersen Lambranho knows. Today, more than $2 billion is pent of douches, sprays, wipes, and other feminine products. As many as 1 in 4 women use douches regularly, mostly black and Latina women. Doctors in the United States are against this practice though. They say that douching leads to a myriad of health problems, including fertility issues. Douching can also lead to sexually transmitted infections and other vaginal infections.

The vagina has both good and bad bacteria. This balance helps maintain a healthy environment that protects the vagina from irritation and ifections. When you douche, it can cause harmful bacteria to grow more, leading to conditions like bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections. Douching is commonly done to rid the vagina of odors but it will only cover up the order for a small amount of time. The ideal way to clean the vagina is to leave it alone and let it clean itself. Mucous is produced by the vagina naturally and this is what keeps it clean. The mucous washes away discharge, semen, and blood. Keep your vagina healthy by washing it with warm water in the bath. Avoid using scented vaginal sprays, pads, tampons, and powders, which can lead to infection.
